Sand Filter

The pressure filter available in Standard plant range are two basic types, in terms of the filter media. Filter is available with either graded sand as the media. Depending on individual merits, either one or a combination of can be used for a particular water.

The pressure filter comprises of a FRP pressure vessel containing the media, provided externally with a valve and piping to direct and control flow of water during treatment and for cleaning. The media is supported by layers of crushed silex of specific size.

The vessel is provided with inlet and outlet strainers for distribution / uniform collection. This strainer will ensure even distribution across the surface of the filter bed, to control and measure flow during normal and cleaning operations, flow indicators are provided at optional cost. Pressure gauges is provided at the inlet to measure inlet pressure.

The pressure filter with sand as media uses sand of two, different, carefully selected sizes mixed intimately together. Unlike conventional sand filter using a single grade of sand, this special media permits flow velocities nearly three times those used in conventional filter. This filter is called Multigrade Filter.

The activated carbon filter is used to de-chlorinate raw water has been chlorinated and also same times for removal of organic impurities. Depending on the suspended matter content in the water to be filtered, it can be used either by itself or following a sand filter.

Working Principle

In a Pressure Sand Filter, water is passed through multi layers of filter media consisting graded sand, pebbles and gravels layers. The contaminants in the water are captured in the media bed and filtered water passes into the discharge manifold at the bottom of the tanks. The next and last step is backwashing, a process of effectively removal of captured contaminants from the media bed. After back-washing the filter is rinsed with raw water and after the required quality of water is achieved the filter is put back into service.

Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are generally employed in the process of removing organic compounds and/or extracting free chlorine from water, thereby making the water suitable for discharge or use in manufacturing processes. Eliminating organics in potable water, such as humic and fulvic acid, prevents chlorine in the water from chemically reacting with the acids and forming trihalomethanes, a class of known carcinogens.

Activated Carbon (AC) filtration, as with any water treatment method, is not capable of removing every possible type of contaminant.
